The Katrina Martin School of Dancing travelled from Dunoon on November 19 to take part in the International Gathering of Highland Dancing weekend, surrounded by the Christmas magic at Disneyland Paris.

Despite the devastating Paris attacks on November 13 with the terrorist shootings in the French capital, Team Martin, after reassurance from the Foreign Office and event organisers, made the decision to still attend the event.

“We had some reservations about attending the competition after the devastating attacks in Paris”, says Katrina, “we were travelling via the train to Disneyland Paris just six days after the tragedy and parents were concerned.

“After many discussions, we had five members of the team who felt that they just could not travel and enjoy the experience.

“We were sad that not all team members were able to attend but with the situation as it was, we totally respected everyone’s individual decision.”

The competition itself – which was originally to be held outwith Disney in a local Sport Centre - was relocated within the Disneyland Paris resort for safety and as a result the remaining members of the team felt confident enough to travel.

“The build up to the event was trying,” said David Bridge, managing director of Take Us 2 The Magic, event organisers.

“All things considered, the event operated perfectly, everything was in place, remained in place and it worked superbly.

“After all the reservations, all those who attended the Gathering were wonderful.

“All the dancers were a credit to themselves, their parents, their teachers and the world of Scottish highland dancing.

“It was a little bit of magic amidst the tragic events”

Kristina had a very successful trip with Corah MacLeod winning the ‘Minnie Mouse’ trophy within her category and an amazing 40 medals between the eight dancers was achieved.

The dancers also took part in the Pre Parade along Main Street USA which was an amazing experience for each of the dancers making it a trip of a life time.
