AN application for South Cowal Community Development Company’s bid to buy Castle Toward went before Scottish Government ministers yesterday (Tuesday) – and ministers have instructed Argyll and Bute Council not to sell the historic property to any other party.

With the first stage in the proposed community purchase complete, the council is prohibited from selling the property, or putting it on the market. Argyll and Bute Council has 63 days to respond to Scottish ministers, and the authority’s comments will then be passed back to SCCDC for its comments before the final application is considered by the Scottish Government.

This effectively gives the community around five months to work on its purchase plans.

SCCDC chair Alan Stewart said: “This decision is great news for the Cowal peninsula.

“The Scottish Community Right to Buy Scheme has placed a ‘prohibition of sale’ order on anyone from selling or actively seeking a buyer for the Castle Toward estate until the community council buyout committee has exhausted its options to buy, and until the Scottish land fund has made its decision on how best the castle and grounds could be sold.”
