The dead man has been named as Mark McGauchie, aged 33, whose body was found within a house in Cowal Place at 1am on Monday.
On Tuesday morning, a senior detective told the Standard that police have detained a man in connection with the murder inquiry.
It was also confirmed that there is no link between Mr McGauchie's murder and a serious assault on 45-year-old John Findlay, which also occurred at 1am the same day.
Mr Findlay was taken to Inverclyde Royal Hospital on Monday in a 'serious' condition in Inverclyde Royal Hospital, with injuries to his head and upper body following the attack in Kirk Street, Dunoon. It is understood that these are not life-threatening, although they could result in permanent scarring or disfigurement.
Detectives are following a positive line of enquiry regarding the assault on Mr Findlay.
Police dismissed national media reports suggesting that Mr McGauchie had been decapitated, saying: "That is absolutely not the case."
They have also indicated that the two incidents were not random attacks.
A further statement is expected from Strathclyde Police later on Tuesday afternoon.
