After a decade of hard work by Strachur and District Community Development Company and others around the community, Strachur's brand new playing field was used for a senior event for the first time on Saturday April 7.
Sited on land formerly belonging to Strachur Estate on Strachurmore Farm, the Strachurmore Sports Centre will not be formally opened until the summer, but this was the first real test for the pitch and pavilion facilities.
As a large crowd of interested spectators gathered from near and far, Strachur and District shinty team took to the new turf to face Fife side Aberdour in a Marine Harvest South Division One tie. As befits such an occasion, the teams were led on to the pitch by young piper Calum MacPherson.
In the end, Strachur ran out victors by two goals to one (full report in this week's Standard), and it would have been something of a let-down if they hadn't won, in all honesty.
But this was more a victory for the Strachur community, and for the hard-working members of the development company who persevered in a fundraising climate that has become a great deal tougher since the early years of the scheme.
As the filed out from the ground, the word on the lips of the majority of spectators discussing this major new sporting venue for Cowal was 'fantastic'.
