COWAL JUNIOR RUGBY

Cowal youth rugby

LAST Sunday Cowal Junior Rugby was finally able to host the latest round of the Dalriada mini-rugby tournament for kids from p4 to p7 – at the fourth time of trying.

With the weather being as bad as it has been over the last couple of months the decision was taken to use the safe option and play on the new 3G astro pitch behind Dunoon Grammar School. This proved to be the right option as the pitch at the stadium was frozen and the rugby that was produced on the astro turf was a huge success considering this was the first time this type of surface had been used for rugby in Dunoon.
A huge turnout of players and parents from Oban, Mull, Arrochar, Taynuilt, Islay, Mid-Argyll and Cowal ensured that everyone had a great day and the kids enjoyed playing on a surface that was unfamiliar to them. Fittingly Cowal p4/5 team kicked off the tournament playing against Arrochar and we were treated to a very tight but competitive game which seemed to set the standard of competition throughout the day. The result was a draw with two tries each being scored.
The games were now coming thick and fast and the action and entertainment on show was a great testament to all the kids after having such a long lay off over the Christmas period. By the end of the day Mull ran out worthy winners in a very tight group, but all the Cowal players showed great character and have a lot of talent which will stand them in good stead for the future.
Lewis Danby was named Cowal’s most improved player of the day.
Team: C Walton, G Millar, I Malcolm, J Anderson, N McKay, L Danby, K McLennan and S Bradley.
Meanwhile on the other pitch Cowal’s p6/7 boys joined up again with their new found friends from Islay to compete in the older age group.
Cowal/Islay's first game against Taynuilt again proved to be tight and competitive with the away side just edging the win with three tries to two. This result did not deter Cowal/Islay and they went on to put in some fine performances to draw a couple of their games.
Taynuilt were eventual winners in this group but again the Cowal players put on very promising performances and with more game time they will develop into very good players.
Mathew Morrison was named Cowal’s p6/7 most improved player of the day.
Team; M Morrison, S Adams, A McLean, F McGhee and B Doherty.
Cowal Junior Rugby would like to give a huge thanks to Allan Blincow and his staff at The View for providing the catering and transporting it to the school which proved popular with everyone. Also thanks to Dunoon Girl Guides for letting the Islay youngsters stay in their hall overnight. The next round will be held in Oban in February and we look forward to taking everyone through for another great day out.
