IN THE latest blow to NHS Highland – and the local community – both Cowal Hospice Staff Sisters have now resigned their positions.
This follows the recent departure of all three of Cowal’s specialist health visitors and, it is understood, two other nurses within Dunoon Hospital. Cowal Hospice was recently closed for a short while – because of staff shortages elsewhere in the hospital – before continuing its excellent work, temporarily, in another part of the hospital building while renovation work took place. The hospice building is expected to re-open next month. Asked: “I understand that BOTH staff sisters in Cowal Hospice have now resigned. Can you confirm this? “How many hospice nurses are left in the employ of NHS Highland (Cowal and Bute)? “There seem to have been a lot of resignations among Dunoon Hospital's nursing staff recently. Why do you think that is? “Royal College of Nursing expressed concern over the possible impact of these resignations on patients, and that 'managers must work with staff to resolve issues.' What is Cowal and Bute's reaction to this? “Will the lack of Sisters delay the re-opening of the Cowal Hospice building? “Will replacement Sisters be recruited internally, or will the posts be advertised? “When is the re-opening scheduled for?”, an NHS Highland spokesman replied: “Due to reasons of employee confidentiality NHS Highland cannot comment on individual members of staff past or present.”
