“MAJOR DEPLOYMENT OF FIRE CREWS” AS OBAN TRAIN DERAILS

A fire on board an Oban-bound train has caused it to derail near Taynuilt this evening (Sunday).

Initial reports say that two carriages are hanging over a 15-metre embankment. Although two people are reported as having been airlifted to hospital, a source close to Argyll’s emergency services said that all of the 60 passengers aboard the train have been accounted for, although many are said to be shocked and alarmed after having to walk along the tracks to safety.

An emergency call from a passenger reporting the derailment was received just before 9pm.

The A85, A819 and B845 roads between Taynuilt and Dalmally are closed in both directions to allow access for the emergency services and drivers are asked to approach the area with caution.

A British Transport Police spokesman said: "The train involved was the 1820 hours Glasgow Queen Street to Oban service. This is a two-car train and the leading car has derailed and caught fire.

"All passengers have been safely taken off the train, but the leading car remains overhanging the road.

"British Transport Police, Strathclyde Police and emergency services are attending the scene."

Strathclyde Fire and Rescue Service said there was a "major deployment of fire crews and appliances".

These included a major incident unit from Clydebank and heavy rescue vehicle from Easterhouse.

Police units from Dunoon are also assisting.
