If you’ve idly turned the dial on your radio of a cold winter’s evening lately, and discovered a new station playing perhaps the widest selection of tunes you could think of, from rave to rock to ceilidh to classics – then chances are you’ve landed on 97.4FM, the home of Dunoon Community Radio. With regular DJs Victor and Douglas ad-libbing and bantering across the airwaves like they’ve been doing it for years, a host of guest presenters, and of course all those tunes, it’s hard to believe that the fledgling station has only been broadcasting for a few weeks. The station’s success is even more remarkable when you go behind the scenes at the studio – a corner of an office in Dunoon’s town centre.

Book review: "Operation Mincemeat" by Ben Macintyre (Bloomsbury)

A NEW book by author and Times columnist Ben Macintyre attempts to shed new light on an audacious WWII plan to fool Nazi intelligence by using a fictional spy – who happened to be dead. The book also reveals Cowal’s role in the plan which was made into a film in 1956: “The Man who Never Was,” starring Clifton Webb, Gloria Grahame and Robert Flemyng. Although a fascinating and well-written book, 'Operation Mincemeat' ignores some crucial new facts in this riveting story.

Are you one of those people who, like me, used to hear the ‘old’ people in your family regularly discussing family history – yet, in the blissful ignorance of youth, completely ignored what was being said? These days, with the benefit of hindsight and a (very small) accumulation of wisdom – what I wouldn’t give to be able to go back and discuss this almost-forgotten family history with my forebears.
