JOB CUTS AT GTi

Local company GTi has confirmed that a number of jobs will be cut at its Sandbank operation.
The company issued a statement earlier this week which said: “It is with great sadness and regret that GTi has had to announce that it os making a number of redundancies at its premises in Sandbank.
“These redundancies are due to the completion of a major distribution contract relating to CFLs (low energy lightbulbs).
“As a result of these imposed changes, GTi has to take the very difficult decision of streamlining the business to ensure its long term future.
“It is important to note that the GTi core business, which is the supply and provision of draught proofing and insulation products, remains very busy and is continuing to grow.
“GTi continues to work with the power companies on many other projects to deliver energy efficient products through their various web shops as well as through other schemes.  In addition, GTi has other clients and contracts out with the energy market which they continue to develop.
“Although impossible to predict the future of the business in these uncertain economic times, GTi, as ever remains optimistic and will be making every effort to secure new work and hopefully be in a position to reverse this regrettable but necessary action.”
A spokesman subsequently told the Standard: “At this stage, we do not know how many redundancies we will have to make.
“We are now just entering the at risk, consultation stage where we will be identifying those employees at risk and interviewing them over the coming days.
“I can say, though, that it will not be a huge number.”
The company was established in 1994 and expanded to offer a number of different products and services, becoming one of Cowal’s major employers.
At its peak, it employed up to 110 local people and was dispatching around 12 to 15 million energy efficient products each year on behalf of its power company clients.
Currently, the group employs 68 people and numbers Royal Mail and Scottish Power among its partners.

DIVERS RESCUED FROM CLYDE
A diver spent half an hour in the chill waters of the Firth of Clyde on Monday morning after getting into difficulties while diving from the Inverclyde shore.
Reports were received by Clyde coastguard at 11.30am that two men were in difficulty in choppy sea conditions just offshore.
The Maritime and Coastguard Agency confirmed that the younger of the two men managed to reach the shore, but his diving partner remained clinging to a mooring buoy in a blustery easterly wind.
The 11.20am CalMac ferry service from Gourock to Dunoon was diverted to assist the rescue effort. Passengers on the MV Jupiter reported hearing the man overboard alert sounding, before one of the ship’s rescue craft was launched.
The Helensburgh lifeboat  later reached the scene and transported both men to a waiting ambulance at 12.10pm.
The Royal Navy rescue helicopter was requested, but later stood down.
The men were taken to Inverclyde Royal Hospital, and their condition is unknown at this time.
