A former Argyll and Bute head teacher was struck off after a disciplinary hearing yesterday (Tuesday) for embezzling £3,000.
When he was head teacher of Hermitage Academy, Helensburgh, Donald Matheson (60) rented out part of the playground to an ice cream van for £10 a day. It later emerged that he took the cash for himself.
His behaviour was described as “reprehensible and disgraceful” by the General Teaching Council Scotland (GTCS). The disciplinary sub-committee of the GTCS ruled that Mr Matheson be banned from teaching by removing him from the professional register.
The allegation related to the period between October 2003 and May 2005.
The board calculated that £3,290 in payments should have been made to the school from the ice cream van, but was not.
When it became apparent that he was being investigated Mr Matheson took early retirement on a full pension.
