Ron Simon, an Argyll and Bute councillor, is seeking the community's views on the future of Dunoon pier. He would like to see it transformed into an exciting visitor attraction - and wants to know what you think.
Should the pier be knocked down altogether? Should it stay as it is? Or do you have other ideas?
Tell us what you think.

No way should it be knocked down - it`s iconic and a symbol of dunoon world wide - enough piers have been knocked down already.I hope we don`t hear any of the usual excuses from the council about it becoming unsafe or too expensive to repair(absolute b**l) if you ask me.I have it on good authority that the overall structure of the pier, because of the wood that was used,is capable with a bit of loving care ,of lasting another 100 years.By all means, jazz it up,but I for one will chain myself to the pier if they even hint at demolishing the central stem!!

That`s if the new link-span is used all the time. Have you seen the spray and waves that come over the breakwater in the winter? There could be safety issues for users of the facility. It may be that the link-span position is too close to the breakwater, to have the desired effect of a calm berth. Is there anyone that has some knowledge of this, and how often it is likely to be a problem, if at all? What if it ends up a passenger only service,is it suitable/adaptable for these type of vessels in stormy conditions?

As one of the few major piers in Scotland, it would be a tragedy if this fine pier was demolished. There has been a pier at Dunoon since 1835. The pier was enlarged and a new waiting room constructed in 1867 to cater for the growth of paddle-steamer traffic and this was further improved with a larger 400 foot jetty in 1881. The pier was again rebuilt in 1895 resulting in the two-birth structure broadly as it exists today. It seems inconceivable that demolition of this very fine structure would be considered. Many resort towns throughout Britain would dearly love to have such an obvious tourist attraction and the National Piers Society would be horrified were such a handsome, iconic pier to be lost.
