I have a touch of Deja vu here. Nothing's changed!
I am sitting in front of emails and letters from MPs dated 2006, yes 2006 and 2008. The estimated savings, quoted by the head of planning and performance, for this proposal then was £30,000. at that point the suggestion was the removal of two in-house minibuses. There was no estimate, at that time, of the number of children that would be affected by the policy change. I assume that there has been sufficient time to calculate this now?
The real cost of this policy change:
The worst case - the life of a child.
The best case- Again, we have to have fresh surveys done on
all the routes to schools - all over Argyll and Bute! We will have to pay for additional costs for installation of new crossing patrols, that's assuming that we manage to get staffing for the patrols.
The be all and end all is that we are having to pay for the transport of our children to school. No big deal I hear you say but I thought that my taxes already did that? How many more parents will take their children to school in the car? My last survey showed that this would be huge. Higher traffic for the children that do have a short walk to school. And the routes that are deemed unsafe to walk? Well, they continue get transport. I would be interested in the final savings figure after all the the surveys and added infrastructure.
There will, of course, be exemptions? What will they be? Ability to pay etc.
What final figure do our councillors have at the bottom of their page? I would like to know. Does it include the cost of the last safe route survey which was estimated at costing £150.00 per route?
